Gadgets and Gizmos

I am a fan of technology, especially the nifty little gadget kind. When I'm up late and an infomercial comes on, undoubtedly by the end of it I am thoroughly convinced that their latest wonder product is something I cannot live without (yet somehow I survive.)

Technology has the power to simplify, rethink and reimagine ordinary tasks and processes that we have all become accustomed to. There is one fairly new design related product I stumbled upon on the inter-webs that really caught my eye - The Structure Sensor. In a nutshell, The Structure Sensor is a handheld accessory for iPads and iPhones that allows user to quickly scan 3D objects and environments, but if you ask me - it's a game changer. Imagine virtually never having to pull out your camera and tape measurer again. I believe The Structure Sensor has the ability to replace both tools, as it is able to both visually catalog and document a space or object with qualitative and quantitative data, all which can be seamlessly integrated into your mobile device or computer.

“Structure Sensor – Capture the World in 3D.

3D Scanning. Augmented Reality. Instant Measurements.”

The video below demonstrates the device in action ( at 2x the speed) live streaming data wirelessly to the users Macbook

It's worth noting that the precision of these measurements and scans is accurate within 0.15% minimum and 1.1% maximum. The portable hardware is designed to be used in conjunction with Skanect, a software program which is popular choice in 3D scanning, though it is compatible with other programs. The technology is still quite new and has it's imperfections - but it already has a high degree of functionality and utility. The possibilities seem great, I know I would certainly like to get my hands on one. Click on the company logos below to be redirected to their respective sites for more information.
