Knowing When to Edit

It is definitely possible to get carried away or lost in a concept and start to lose focus of the big picture. Knowing how and when to reel it in and simplify is critical to executing high quality designs. Often times subtleties or the hint or alluding to an idea or image can be far more powerful than spelling things out.
It is important to know when and how to edit yourself, both in design and life in general. Getting rid of the clutter and frills can lead to a clearer message with less distracting noise. One example I can point to recently came about with designing a logo for a medical tourism facility I designed. The idea was for the logo to resemble a sun setting over the water.
The first sketches and renderings took this design a bit more literally and ended up being a bit muddy. Later renderings simplified and abstracted those shapes more, and ultimately resulted in a cleaner, more professional logo for the branding and signage of the facility.
Examples of each included below.
