SOFTlab NYC

Recently I have been looking into design studios and firms based in New York City. As I alluded to in my last post, I have a bit of a soft spot for up and coming technology and people/ideas that tend to push the envelope. SOFTlab seems to be doing just that. They have put together a unique team that, not unlike myself, takes a different sort of approach to design. Each of their projects and designs feels like a foray into some futuristic unknown land, but the really weird part is that they all work. Like really work, like make you feel something, go home and tell somebody about it type of works. Isn't that what good design is about? Serving your customers needs while trying new things and making an impact both physically and emotionally by creating something engaging and exciting.

"By mixing research, creativity and technology with a strong desire to make working fun, SOFTlab attempts to create new and unique experiences."

SOFTlab uses research, technology, programming and really all the tools at their disposal based on their teams individual skillsets, the world around them to concept and create for the task at hand.

Due to the size, scale and interactive nature of their projects, a lot of their truly needs to be allowed to speak for itself. They have created large scale art and lighting installations. Luckily their website does a great job of detailing the client, concept and execution of each of their installations. Heavily rooted in concept based experiential design, SOFTlab appears to be an innovative up-and-comer who will only become more influential with time.
